  • Does anyone know exactly what the 1st press of Kisou looks like and what it comes with? I have a habit of wanting all the 1st press versions of CD's. I already have Kisou but have no idea if its the 1st press or not, and the place nearby that sells some Japanese CD's has another version (totally silver front cover instead of the grey front cover - both are official CD's, just ones obviously older than the other.)

    Any ideas?

  • Dont really have a favorite song. For the most part, they are all adequate at best.

    As for members, I personally admire Kaoru, as he is the only member actually driven business-wise in the band. He isnt just loafing around.

  • Yes I love Dir en grey.
    Even if I am a Gauze and Macabre era *****, I just love all their music... I kinda miss their hard visual days now... but without a doubt they are still a very strong visual kei band.

    Fav songs eh?... I can't decide one, but in the case I just can pick one song by them to listen the rest of my life, it would be Mazohyst of Decadence, a masterpiece that transport you into Kaoru's masochist mind, and Kyo's explicit description of an abort... it make my cry sometimes.
    I also love... -I'll- and Toriko (oh, how I love those songs...), Unknown...Despair...a Lost, Yokan (so much memories), Akuro no Oka (beutiful Kyo poem there), MASK, Myaku and Ash (another single with awesome songs... I love both!), MACABRE (a pretty good runner-up for Mazohyst!), Deity, Zakuro (that lyrics...), FILTH, karasu, Gyakujou tannou Keloid Milk (possibly the best on Kisou), and of VULGAR I like RED...[em], NEW AGE CULTURE and AMBER the most... the whole album is good as always though... songs like DRAIN AWAY and OBSCURE should be in the list as well.
    And I am in absolute love with the new single, The Final, the PV is also very good. This song is a beautiful melodic song, somewhat like DRAIN AWAY but Kyo's singin way is something new in this song... maybe a mix between the old and the new Kyo... awesome!

    Ah, Dir en grey is quite good. Definitely far from one of my favorite bands, but I like their music nonetheless. Mitsu to Tsuba (Tsumi to Batsu) is my favorite for both song and pv of theirs. Macabre and 24ko Cylinder are good songs, too.

    What do you all think of Diru's new single, "The Final"? Have you read the lyrics to it?

    I LOVE "The Final." I think it's very beautiful and is a great mix of old and new Dir en grey. Reminds me A LOT of the movie "The Crow." The lyrics are very beautiful and poetic and I adore the imagery. Kyo also sounds extremely wonderful in this song -- I tend to like it more when he really sings as opposed to when he's screaming, convulsing, orgasming, and mumbling in songs because he has a really great voice and huge vocal range.

    I think musically the band made a great move; if "The Final" is a step through the door to Dir e grey's evolution, then I'm really looking forward to what they release later.

    Anyway, Dir en grey is my favorite JRock band... and it's impossible for me to pick a favorite song. ^_^;

  • Check if it's not a Hong Kong or Taiwan release. Those usually have a different cover.

    I think you can tell the pressing of a cd when you look at the inside (usually transparent) ring of the disc. There's usually a number printed there and if the last number is a 1, then it should be a first pressing.

    I have the 1st edition of the Gauze album. I didn't know much about Dir en Grey back then, except that it was a merger of 2 indies bands. One was La'Sadies and the other i can't remember.
    I bought the album mainly because X-Japan drummer/pianist Yoshiki was involved in the production.

    Kyo's energetic alright! To quote who ever said it first (soz, i dun remember where i first heard it) "Kyo's voice is great for screeching, screaming, vomiting, rasping, crying, and wailing, but when it comes to actual singing, he falls a bit short." I couldn't imagine a DeG with a different sort of vocalist anyway. And that, along with their visual image, may be what got them noticed.

  • Gauze is an awesome album. My friend bought me the "Mars" album that Gackt put out for my birthday, and she got "Gauze". I was glad that it had most of my favorite songs on it. But hell... there's this song.....where there is a baby crying in the beginning... I don't know what it's called but it's really neat. I like the song itself.

  • You know, I've got mixed feelings about DeG. I like the way they change their style that suits them best for each era, regardless of what fans think.

    But at another rate, they arent the greatest of musicians.

    Shinya, in my ears, has improved greatly over the years, but the others havent all too much.

    Especially Toshiya. Sure, he plays some 'relatively' challenging basslines, but for the most part, he lacks personality in his playing.

    As traditional musicians, I personally think they all could use a pointer or two *minus Shinya, who has improved*. But as trendsetters, they are one of the two most influencial bands in Jrock of the last 10 years, no doubts about that.

  • I just downloaded my first ever dir en grey. Iīm listening to "mask" again and again, itīs got somekind of a hook that I lllove. Mixing ska and dnb, great. :)
    I also had some other songs, but at least the slow ones I didnīt like..but these with some "attitude" in them..
    ..and I did saw some of their pics..great characters, something different..nnice ;)

    Think in "Mazohyst of Decadence", the song is about an abort... Kyo sings like if he is actually the embryo that is being aborted... pretty impressive.

    Now my view on the song.....

    MY GOD ITS AMAZING!!! Seriously.. its a fantastic song and I recommend everyone listens to it. After the first few seconds when it kicks in you'll just go crazy for it. Its very commerical and western (sounds like a lot of the music I listen to that isn't japanese.) I definately hear Linkin Park influences which isn't surprising since a couple of members like their stuff. I can also hear some Lostprophets in the song (a UK based band who I spent a year following all over the country.. I'm even in there ShinobiVSDragonNinja music video) even though I think its unlikely they'll have ever heard of them. Drain away is still really heavy but definately more easy listening than the majority of songs on Kisou and Six Ugly. I wouldn't say they're mellowing out just yet, but they're definately trying to hit to worldwide market.

    Thats about what I said in my last unworking message re-written (though it was better the first time!). Oh, before I forget.. I'm really looking to make lots of friends in Japan to meet during my forthcoming trip to Tokyo this May. Ideally I'd love to meet people into bands like dir en grey (am happy to be introduced to new bands!) especially if you can introduce me to some clubs that play this kind of music and don't mind me tagging along! Even if you don't, I'd still love to hear from you.

    I could write even more about the incredible nature of Drain Away, but you might all get horrendously bored of me so I'll just shut up now..

  • So, I have got this video of Dir En Gray. Two actually, and I don’t have any names for the songs, so I could use some help.

    First one is filmed in a futuristic place, with a naked woman who pokes her eye out, and a other woman in a latex dress, chained up to a chair and lost of blood and the main guitarist has a gas mask on.. but its pink.. Whats this video and song called?

    Second: this is filmed in a abandoned warehouse of some kind, and out in a forest. The singer is running over the fields and in the forest, and in a forest, and he is sitting in the warehouse, playing insane.. but the best part of this song is a great it has the best bass solo I have ever heard.. its so cool its like.. wow. So, what is this songs name? (oh there is also alot of playing on a stage inside the warehouse.. and alot of blood and insame people stuff in it)

  • Well I do know what they are about.... But I was talking to someone who seemed to know more than I did and they said that all of Kyo's songs are love songs. I was in a bit of a disbelief, since most of their songs entail death, suicide and generally morbid topics. That's just what I was told.

    Well my fav songs have to be Cage(that was the fist song I heard form them by acciedently downloading the PV), I love Egnirys Cimredopyh(boy i had had a weird thing happen when listening to this song, sitting in bad in the dark and when kyo sings the part with the cat looking at him I looked up to see a cat looking at me through my window, scared me half to death )

  • Um...honestly, Dir en Grey have lyrically (and musically) evolved to more of an alternative metal/punk band. The lyrics are >good<.
    Suicide, social criticism, abortion, sexual abuse of children, incest, oh and lovesongs.
    That kind of stuff's most of their songs about.

    Personally, I like Drain Away, 24 Cylinders and Mushi.

    Toshiya is an awesome bass player.
    And Shinya a living drumming machine.
    Otherwise, they are average (I can play the guitar stuff *g*), though Kyo has a very characteristic voice.

  • The first time i hear any song, it goes in and straight out again. Only after i hear it a two or more times, i start memorizing parts of it, at which moment i can really decide whether i like a song or not.

    There are songs that i like instantly, but those usually get boring after a few rounds of listening.
    Songs that i don't get at first, are usually the ones that stay good forever. It's odd, but that's the way i experience music.

  • The Cage PV can also be found on the Gauze PV dvd, which was out of print for a while but was reissued some time ago, perhaps a year or so. It can be found... through special ordering at Kinokuniya, CDJapan, or probably YesAsia. If you're just looking for the Cage PV though, and that's all, you'd probably be better off just downloading it, even though the DVD quality is 10,000x sexier.

    Maybe not. If you search for dir en grey lyrics on Yahoo! a whole bunch of sites come up but if you misspell it by putting dir en gray not as many will. You also might want to try searching for Diru or Diru an. Diru is the Japanese equivelent of Dir en grey and I've heard so is Diru an. I'm not sure how well that would work on a search engine tho. :note:
    I'm going to listen to dome Dir en Gray...as soon as it downlaods anyhow. For now I'll listen to Weiss.

  • On topic : Strange.. I loved it just as much as I do now the first time I heard it. Its hard to say if its my favourite because I love it just as much as many of their other songs I love. It really depends on my mood. This one reminds me of how much I need to get out there and just sing in a band for the rest of my life. No idea why!

    Got the PV too which looks like it should rock, but the quality isn't up to much so I have to watch it on a tiny tiny screen size.

    Oh yeah, and I'm totally never going to get to see these guys live. That really sucks!

  • my opinion is that kyo sounds and looks cool. his voice and style to do things are absolutely good, but as i said that's my opinion and if i like i like then^^ anyway. i heard that kyo is vocalist because he can't play. why he can't play, is that for example playing guitar is too difficult to him. but i love him and his voice anyway, so that doesn't matter really.

    dir en grey's songs are very good. yokan is awsome, even my friends who don't really like jrock have liked it :)

    I like Deg a lot, they're one of my favorite bands. I just hope the upcoming single isn't in the Drain Away/Kasumi style. While it is nice, it's not my kind of thing. Hopefully it'll be something like Child Prey again~
    Vulgar was a good album, but I think Macabre or Kisou was much better. Vulgar was a little too... I don't know how to put it, too (and this sounds silly) "rock" sounding? Maybe it was the particular style of some of the songs like Amber and Obscure. Marmalade Chainsaw, Increase Blue, and Asunaki Koufuku Koenaki Asu were loverly.

    (I do believe Kyo is a very talented vocalist though. Die and Kaoru, and nice as their stage presence and percieved personalities are, are not really anything special in the guitar department. Shinya is good, I have a special little spot for Toshiya simply because he makes bass sound nice. =)

  • If he'll let you open it, the lyrics booklet has English lyrics and there's Japanese ones under the plate that the disc goes on, I forget what it's called. Those are definite signs that it's a first press =)
    First press also has a solid silver covering instead of grey, so the one you are looking at is probably indeed a first pressing.

    my fav member of this band is kyo cuz i just love his lyrics and voice, it's beautiful and also i love Toshiya cuz he's hot^_~ and a very good bassist. I like how Shinya drums so hard and still maintains his hair XD Kaoru and Die are pretty good guitarists too

  • Um...honestly, Dir en Grey have lyrically (and musically) evolved to more of an alternative metal/punk band. The lyrics are >good<.
    Suicide, social criticism, abortion, sexual abuse of children, incest, oh and lovesongs.
    That kind of stuff's most of their songs about.

    Personally, I like Drain Away, 24 Cylinders and Mushi.

    Toshiya is an awesome bass player.
    And Shinya a living drumming machine.
    Otherwise, they are average (I can play the guitar stuff *g*), though Kyo has a very characteristic voice. i'd have to agree with you on the songs, and that totchi and shinya are awesome, but Kaoru and Die aren't average in my opinion. the stuff isn't hard, but they put their hearts into that music and kaoru's solos kick ass. :)

    kyo has an awesome voice ^_^ it's better than any i've heard so far, although I haven't really dove into jrock as much as you probably have

    You guys really should listen to the single released this year (2004/03/17) THE FINAL. I bet itīs going to be in your top favorite Deg songs.

    I (like a majority of people I know) like Raison d'etre as one of my favorites. That and Cage....and Yokan. Kyo has a very disturbed mind ( I like it ) ;) Also, once I heard that all of Dir en Grey's songs are love songs. I don't know if that is necessarily true or not. Oh well. Any Dir en Grey fans out there?

  • My favorite Diru song was Zan for the longest time because I loved Kyo's maniacal laughing. Recently though, I haven't been able to get Machiavellism out of my head, even though it strays slightly from Dir en grey's usual sound. Other favorites include: Ain't Afraid To Die, Obscure, Marmalade Chainsaw, Mr. Newsman, Cage, I'll, and Wake. It's safe to say that I love all the songs ^.^" And they just get better as they go! Obscure has always reminded me of the band KoRn, for some reason.

    As for my favorite member, it's gotta be Die. Kyo is cool, but Die just looks so friggin' awesome with a muzzle. Yeah man.

    I don't think I have a favourite actually. It changes constantly.

    I totally get the band thing. I always wanted to play in a band, guitaring it up. Then I'd get to tour Japan, and see the boys in action.

  • Many would listen to them even if they didn't have the visual kei image. I know of plenty of people. And I wasn't saying that they just listen to Dir en grey because of Kyo's voice... but most people don't like to listen to someone who can't sing worth crap. And you can't really blame him for singing bad in lives because he is headbanging and all that and that would throw anyone off.

    Riyuu, mitsu to tsuba, drain away, audrey, saku (really like the PV to that one), berry, marmalade chainsaw, pink killer, the final, ain't afraid to die, akuro no oka, umbrella, keibi, and sangeki no yoru.

    Definitely kyo is my favorite member. Even being a guy, I'd do him for free, no charge.
