Cons of deforestation?

  • I already have a few pros for deforestation, but I also need cons. What I DO have:

    Loss in diversity
Photosynthesis makes the atmosphere cooler as the trees "breathe"
    No trees = warmer atmosphere
    Soil erosion

Are there any more cons that I missed?

  • Trees consume CO2 and their cutting down reduces the CO2 usage, contributing to climate change.

After deforestation, soils are usually unstable and subject to erosion. The crops are less productive than a sustainably managed forest and the run off of soil pollutes water courses.

Deforestation is often a precursor to desertification. The micro climate created within forest means that water evaporates more slowly and is stored in underground aquifers. After deforestation that water is likely to run off and evaporate, eventually drying up the area.

  • One very important "Con" is the Brazilian rain forest. This massive area of trees generates its own climate, resulting in heavy amounts of rain in that region of the world.

Given that trees expire massive amounts of moisture each day, if you have hundreds of millions of trees in a given dense area, you are going to generate a wet climate. Over the eons nature has adapted to that situation, as have human beings. Eliminate that climate driver and you will destroy the climate necessary for that region to survive. Further, the "butterfly" effect will proceed to move the unused moisture to other parts of the world where it may or may not be welcome.

It just doesn't pay to mess around with mother nature, because we as humans, are not nearly as clever as we believe ourselves to be.

  • Sorry to get off the subject but because many lumber companies replant either by force or by choice, I would say that more deforestation is done by individuals. People want to live in the woods, well you have to cut down trees not just for the house but for the access road. A farmer just sold his already open plot to a real estate developer because it's value was high by location to existing urban sprawl so now the farmer buys even more unopened land because it's value is so much less that he can afford to have it cleared and still be in the black.

  • Endangered species - even more endangered.

  • There will be less oxygen and more carbon dyoxide in the air. you will also kill many species of animals.

  • There are several cons for deforestation.
First, we have loss of habitat for wild life such as squirrels and several species of birds. Next, we have less trees that would provide us with Oxygen (we have too much CO2 as it is now and by cutting down trees, it would worsen our status), and lastly, there would be soil erosion especially by sea coasts. There are some pros though. But pros more have to do with economics and money.
--> Oh, don't forget several medicines come from tropical forests :) and deforestation could also ruin our food chain :(

  • Saltation of soils
Loss of habitat for endangered human tribes

  • Well, lets say we take an equal amount of houses as trees and tear them down in clusters and replace them with an unlivable environment...what happens? People are left homeless and have to move into other areas that are already populated, and possibly by people who don't want you there. Same thing goes with the animals and insects that rely on that ecosystem to live.

  • Loss of future resource for wood or paper products if not replanted
Loss of animal habitats and distressing of animal populations
    Aesthetics

  • Trees are neat
